In this video tutorial, we go over the finishing for a Boxed Pin Cushion that is featured in the Happy Alphabet Series, available here.
Step 1: Stitch the main chart, border chart and smalls using the diagram shown below. The black lines are your back stitching lines.
Step 2: To keep all of your stitches going the same direction, rotate your stitching so that you stitch each part in the same direction as it’s label on the diagram.
Step 3: When stitching the border chart, stitch the bottom one in the same orientation as the main chart, then turn your stitching 90 degrees to stitch the left border, turn 90 degrees again to stitch the top border, etc.
Step 4: Backstitch the outline of each part of the design using one strand of either the dark teal, or a thread color that matches your fabric for a more natural look.
Step 5: Once your stitching is finished, cut your stitching out of the base fabric, leaving a 1/4-1/3” border all around. Finger-crease the outlines between the main chart and each border, and between the top border and smalls section.
Step 6: Whip Stitch each border edge to the next border edge, creating the sides of your boxed pin cushion. Then fold the smalls section down and stitch the three open sides to the three remaining long border sides.
Step 7: When you have a small opening remaining, stuff with polyfill or your choice of filling, then finish sewing up the opening.
Optional: Sew a small button or other decoration to the center of the back of the pin cushion (where the four smalls section meet).
